This is an overview of a typical business structure.
The people who control the company are people who may have started of the company which is usually the CEO of the company or the director. Instead of one director who makes the decisions there may be a board of directors who control the business and decide how it is run. This board is usually made up of people who have invested in the company and own substantial shares of the company. If this is the case then all decisions which are made have to go through the board of directors to be finalised. They do not usually work in the company and take a back step from the day to day running of the business.
Next in command is a director who has the heads of different departments report to him and update him with the sectors progress. For example there will be a marketing director, sales director and an operations director. These directors then control managers in each field. There may be a manager who reports directly to the director of their field. The marketing team will take part in a number of marketing campaignes and will probably exhibit at trade show displays in order to get the message to everyone.
There will then be people who help to run the rest of the team. These individuals are usually people who over sea workers directly. An example is head of sales who then relays important information to the sales people who will then try and get sales for that company. This individual will have regular meetings and also check that everything is going to plan. This will then be reported to the sales manager who will then pass it on to the head of marketing.
There are other people who work at companies which you may not have come into contact with such as the payroll or HR department who look after the workers in the company and recruit new staff. This department also look after the well being of people and check that employees are not breaching any staff protocols.
Most offices also have a cleaning team who will come in after hours and ensure that the office is clean and tidy at all times.
If you join a company who have a solid structure then there may be a chance that in time you can start to move up the ladder if the opportunity presents it's self. If you continue to work in this type of environment then you may find that you need to be enthusiastic and work hard to get noticed, especially if it is a large company.
